John Barnes began serving as the Director of our Sanctuary Mass Choir in 2017. John holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He is completing his Master of Divinity at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, where he is a musician in the Office of Worship. He is the immediate past Treasurer of the Black Student Caucus and current Vice President. He will graduate in May 2017.

John brings experience with a range of worshiping communities. Before beginning his studies at Candler, John served as a musician and director at Park Windsor Baptist Church in Los Angeles, where he directed the Sanctuary and Mass Choirs and played piano for the Male Chorus. He also directed the choir at New Generation Baptist Church in Atlanta.

While a student at Candler, John interned at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, where he presided as liturgist in both contemporary and traditional worship services, worked with young adults, and participated in worship planning. He also served as a campus ministry intern at Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School in Atlanta and as a chaplain intern at the Lee Arrendale State Prison.
