Oakhurst offers many activities and classes on Sunday for every age.

Kids

Children’s Choir

For grades pre-K until “too cool for school.” Includes singing, drumming, and movement for fun and learning. Sundays, 9:30 – 10:00 a.m. (during the school year). Children’s choir for 2016 – 2017 begins October 2.

Little Lambs (infants to toddlers)

The Little Lambs ministry is dedicated to providing a nurturing, faith-based environment for our infants to toddlers. Through song and dance storytelling, they learn the most foundational truth of all: I am loved.

Under the leadership of Pam Grisham, our Little Lambs gather every Sunday from 10 am until 12:45 pm while parents are in worship or attending Sunday School. Our program is staffed with experienced, professional caregivers, some of whom have been with OPC for more than 15 years and watched many of our little ones grow up to become young adults.

We have a large room for infants, complete with cribs and a changing table, and a room for toddlers.

To ensure their safety, we require that all children be registered for the nursery. You may stop by the Nursery on Sunday morning on the lower floor of the church across from Pastor Brady’s office.

Sunday School (pre-K to fifth grade)

The Sunday School ministry offers an engaging, hands-on approach to learning Scripture. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of a diverse group of students, while teaching them the fundamental, age-appropriate building blocks of faith:

• Kind Kangaroos (Pre-Kindergarten) – God loves me.
• Peaceful Penguins (Kindergarten and First Grade) – I am a child of God.
• Generous Giraffes (Second and Third Grade) – God is love.
• Loyal Lions (Fourth and Fifth Grade) – For God so loved the world.

For one hour every Sunday (beginning at 10:00 am), children and their teachers engage in dynamic Bible lessons, activities and music. Trained lay and clergy volunteers lead each class.

Sunday School begins at 10:00 during the school year. During the summer months (June through August) there are no Sunday School classes. We worship together at in the sanctuary at 10 a.m.

During Worship

Infants to age 3: Nursery available on the first floor. The Parent’s Room (near the sanctuary entrance) is also available if your infant stays with you during worship and you need a place to sit and care for your baby. You are able to hear the service in this room.

Pre-K to 1st grade: Remain in service through the time with children, then go to Room 32, 2nd floor for Mustard Seed Ministries (see below).

2nd and 3rd grade: Remain in service through the time with children, then leave for Micah’s

Kids on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of the month during the school year. During Micah’s Kids, children engage in service and lift up prayer concerns together.

Mustard Seeds (pre-K through 1st grade)

Mustard Seeds is a unique worship experience for our children that takes place during the 11:00 service. The children begin their time of worship with their families in the sanctuary, then they are led downstairs following the time with children for a scripture lesson and activities just for them.

What is the difference between Sunday School and Mustard Seeds? While both experiences are about learning scripture, Mustard Seeds differs in that it focuses on teaching our young ones practical ways for living faithful lives today. Each week, they will connect a bible story from the lectionary to the way they live each day.

Our time with children takes place after the offering in the worship service. Children and their parents are invited to come sit near the pulpit for a short time with a leader to engage the sermon or theme for the day.

Activity packets are available for children who stay for the full worship service. Clipboards are under the first pew closest to the pulpit.

Adult Sunday School

Friendmakers Class
A diverse group of adults who gather to learn about topics that range from Biblical studies to black history to contemporary issues. The format is presentations mixed with discussions.

Families of Faith
A gathering of people at Oakhurst who are involved in the lives of the 100+ kids connected to our church—parents, friends, aunts, uncles, teachers, and mentors.  The group is laid back, so come when you can. The goal is to offer a boost of love and support as you go through the journey of parenthood or other involvement in kids’ lives.

70s Class
A Bible study for adults of all ages. Classes pray, discuss scripture and are guided by “The Present Word,” which focuses on Bible passages with a central theme (“Faith,” “Justice”, “Politics”, etc).  This groups likens themselves to the 70 Jesus sent ahead of him: Christ (through Scripture) calls us and sends us out into the world to proclaim the Good News.
